I am new to the mini scene and i have recently bought a charcoal grey equinox, im sure to you guys this sound stupid but were all equinox's built with Spi engines, only from pictures and my limited knowlege mine looks to be an Mpi 1275, although i am told it is fully original.

Also i have aa few rust spots which i will be tackling but need to respray, any help on the charcoal grey colour code. Many thanks for any help

Welcome to the forum,

There were 750 equinox's made, 250 Amaranth (Purple) 250 Charcoal and 250 Silver.
They were based on the mini sprite, which was a 1275 SPi engine.

The Equinox and the Cooper 35s were the last special editions using the SPi engine (and some of the Cooper 35's actually have Equinox on the V5 documents as some were names wrong!)

Here are a few thigs you can quickly check so see if it's an SPi or MPi:

Aerial position:  SPi on front wing. MPi on the roof.

Radiator: MPi had a front mounted rad, SPi has the more traditional Side mount radiator (taking the air in through the wing) The change in rad position also meant other items such as the alternator and dizzy/coil pack are different.

Lights: SPi headlight switch on the dash. MPi headlight switch on the stalk.

Airbag: The MPi's have a steering wheel mounted driver's airbag.  SPi doesn't (which means you can fit a steering column drop bracket easily)
